“I’ve come home!” resonated throughout my body the moment I discovered the ancient medium of encaustic. I feel that it echoes the ebb and flow of life as it alters back and forth between hot fluid wax to cool fused layers. It allows me to respond both intuitively in the moment and reflectively as I decide what to embed and layer next. Where do I want transparency and what will I cover with more opaque colour? How will I intertwine and contrast the darks and the lights? When will I lay down symbolic imagery and objects in the process? How deep will I build rich textured depth to contrast with the smoother sections? And so it builds like life itself...this way or that way, rich, vibrant, layered and complex!
